Sample WorkSince 2000, Project Stretch has been implemented at schools and community centers throughout NYC. During this time, staff, teachers and students have developed and implemented activities and projects that involve student participation in 21st Century electronic literacy practices. To see some of the courses that have been developed and implemented in the Stretchmoodle, visit the Sample Courses section of the Stretchmoodle. These courses include a critical look at entertainment by middle schoolers, a high school introduction to sociology, and a course that helps students green their school. Both in and out of the moodle, Project Stretch teachers and students have worked on many exciting projects. Some of the products of these projects and activities are linked below. P.S. 225's Virtual Quilt 5th grade students at P.S. 225, many of whom are first generation immigrants, created an online, virtual quilt that includes pictures and texts representing their lives, interests, and future goals. Their teacher wanted this graphic project to represent each individual student as well as the group collectively. Click here Walls Margy Burns Knight and Anne Sibley O'Brien, in their books Talking Walls and Talking Walls: The Stories Continue, introduce various cultures by exploring walls from around the world. The teacher at I.S. 217 combined the ideas from these books with the genre of concrete poetry to explore how walls are used in various cultures and in our everyday life. The students did research, wrote poems, and designed their pages to create this group website. Click here Native American Shields Students at a school in Queens learned about and created their own Native American shields as a way of representing themselves. Click here Patricia Polacco This site is a tribute to children's author Patricia Polacco. It was created by sixth and eighth grade students at P.S. 225, a K-8 school in Brooklyn. The students read, studied, compared and discussed several books by the author. Through these discussions, the students wrote their own autobiographies using themes present in the books. They also wrote their own responses to each of the books. Click here |
